FAQ

Frequently Asked Legal Questions

What is the limitation period for civil claims under UAE law?
The general rule under the UAE Civil Transactions Law is 15 years, but many claims have shorter periods: 10 years for certain commercial obligations, 3 years for periodic payments such as rent, and as little as 1 year for specific claims. The correct period depends on how the legal relationship is characterised — seek legal review of your documents early, before time runs out.
Can I claim compensation for moral (non-material) damages?
Yes. UAE law allows compensation for moral damages where they directly result from the harmful act, including damage to reputation, feelings, or social standing. The amount is at the court’s discretion, and the strength of your evidence is the decisive factor.
What is the difference between a payment order and an ordinary civil case?
A payment order is a fast-track route available when the debt is evidenced in writing (cheque, bond, signed contract), of a fixed amount, and due — the judge issues it without full pleadings. An ordinary case is needed where the debt itself is genuinely disputed. Choosing the right route from the start saves months of litigation.
I have a judgment in my favour — how do I enforce it?
Once the judgment is final, an execution file is opened before the execution judge. Tools include attachment of bank accounts, vehicles, real estate, and shares, plus travel bans in certain cases. We manage the execution process and asset tracing through to actual collection.
